What is the Annual Election Period?
The AEP occurs every year and runs from October 15 to December 7. During this period, Medicare beneficiaries can switch or enroll in Medicare Part C plans, Part D plans, or go from Medicare Advantage back to original Medicare. Any changes during the AEP will become effective on January 1.
Can I use the AEP to enroll in Medicare for the first time?
Unfortunately, no. Instead, you’ll have to wait for your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) window, which will occur around your 65th birthday or whenever you first become eligible for Medicare.
What happens if I miss the December 7 deadline?
Unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a life event (such as moving to a new home or losing your existing healthcare coverage), you may not be able to make any changes until the next AEP. However, there is a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period that runs from January 1 to March 31, which may accommodate certain plan changes.
